Village API

Group the villages around any reference point into directional quadrants, so coverage down to the village level can be planned, split and assigned without guesswork.

Overview & Solution

The village is India's smallest administrative unit - but operations built on district or tehsil boundaries lose that level of detail. A branch or dealer actually serves whatever villages sit within reach of it, and "within reach" cuts across those larger administrative lines.

The Village API takes a reference point (a branch, a warehouse, a field officer's base) and returns the surrounding villages grouped by compass quadrant and distance. That turns a vague catchment area into an assignable, reviewable list.

Key Value Propositions

  • Directional grouping - villages come back bucketed by quadrant, not as an undifferentiated radius dump, so a day's route stays in one direction.
  • Distance-aware - each village carries its distance from the reference point, making reachability explicit.
  • Boundary-independent - coverage follows travel reality, not administrative lines.

Industry Use Cases

1. Banking & Microfinance

  • Branch catchment definition - establish exactly which villages a branch is accountable for, and surface the ones no branch currently covers.
  • Field officer allocation - split a catchment into four workable territories instead of drawing polygons by hand.

2. Agri-Input Distribution

  • Dealer territory planning - assign villages to the nearest dealer and expose overlaps where two dealers claim the same village.
  • Demand pocket analysis - compare uptake by quadrant to see which direction is under-penetrated.

3. Service Networks

  • Coverage gap discovery - find villages that fall outside every existing service point.
  • Expansion siting - test a candidate location by seeing how many villages it would newly cover.

How it works

graph LR
A[Reference point + radius] --> B[Village dataset lookup]
B --> C[Bearing & distance calculation]
C --> D[Villages grouped by quadrant]
  1. Reference point - you supply a coordinate and a working radius.
  2. Lookup - villages within that radius are retrieved from the platform dataset.
  3. Grouping - each village is placed in a quadrant by bearing, with its distance attached.
